Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars is an American singer, musician and record producer. His birth name is Peter Gene Hernandez. Mars has won numerous Grammys and been recognized as one of the biggest musical acts of the 2010s. His biggest single to date has been “Uptown Funk”, a track off of Mark Ronson’s album Uptown Special that charted in the top ten in 2015. On his own, Bruno Mars has had seven top ten songs and sold over 130 million albums.

Bruno was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on October 8, 1985. Mars’ father is Peter Hernandez, who is half Ashkenazi Jew and half Puerto Rican. His mother is Bernadette San Pedro Bayot, who is mainly of Filipino descent (her parents emigrated from the Phillippines), but she also has some Spanish blood in her family background.

Mars got the nickname Bruno from his father. As a toddler, Mars’ father thought that his young son looked a bit like the professional wrestler Bruno Sammartino, and it stuck.

Bruno has six brothers and sisters. His father, mother and uncle were all musicians well known in Hawaiian music scene, and all of the Hernandez’s children performed in their family’s band called The Love Notes. As they became adults Bruno’s sisters and began pursuing musical careers of their own.

Bruno’s mother Bernadette suffered a fatal brain aneurysm in 2013.

The singer hasn’t been public about his faith much but it’s believed that he is Christian. He has been spotted wearing a cross necklace several times.

When his mother passed away Bruno didn’t reveal anything about his personal religious beliefs. “So thankful for all the love during the most difficult time in my life. I’ll be back on my feet again soon. That’s what mom wants, she told me,” Mars tweeted to his fans six days after her death. (1)

There is absolutely nothing available that hints at whether Bruno Mars leans left or right in his political views. He seems to have made it a point to not use his fame as a platform for his personal beliefs.

However, Mars seems to be actively involved in other issues. In 2012 he gave his talent for the environmental cause known as the Rainforest Fund. (2) He has also donated $1 million dollars to aid relief in Flint, Michigan for their water crisis. “As people, especially as Americans, we need to stand together to make sure something like this never happens in any community ever again,” he said. Mars also supports Candie’s Foundation, an organization that provides awareness of teen mothers and their challenges. He has also given to the Red Cross.

Bruno has been in a longtime relationship with Latina model Jessican Caban since 2011.
