Joel McHale is an American actor and TV show host. Joel is well known for his role as the host of The Soup and his role on the TV show, Community. He was born on the 20th of November, 1971 in Rome, Italy. He attended Mercer Island High School in Washington. After high school he went to the University of Washington, becoming a member of the Theta Chi Fraternity. He was recruited to join the rowing team but ended up playing football as a tight end for two years. He did not officially letter but was a walk on player. While studying at Washington, he got a degree from the Professional Actors Training Program. Joel moved to Los Angeles where he picked up small roles on shows like CSI. Eventually he became the host of The Soup on the E! network.
Joel was raised as a Catholic while he was growing up in Seattle, Washington and New Jersey. He routinely attend mass as a child.
However, when he was a teenager Joel converted to Presbyterian. He spoke about his faith on a 2018 podcast with Dax Shepard:
“I grew up Catholic but I’m a Presbyterian,” Joel said to Dax. “I converted myself while I was a teenager. I still to this day, when it’s Sunday morning I’m like ‘ Church? Ugh.’ But then I go. A couple of friends would take me to a mega-church which I hated…these people were standing and jumping up and down with their arms in the air. I hated that. The Presbyterian church was kind of a happy medium.” (1)
He seems to be more Libertarian in his views. When he spoke up on his political views, he joked that he was a fan President Barack Obama, earning some negative reactions from the crowd. He had also mentioned that the Kardashians are Republicans and are trying to screw black people. It appears he holds some fiscally conservative views but seems to be socially accepting, suggesting that he’s either independent or a Libertarian.
Some of his hobbies involve going out to spend time with friends and watch TV shows, like The Walking Dead. He also likes to get lots of sleep because he says he needs it to keep up with his busy schedule.
He has been married to Sarah Williams since 1996 and now lives in the Hollywood Hills of California. They have two sons named Edward Roy and Isaac Hayden.
