Karen Gillan is a Scottish actress, model and screenwriter. She is most well-known for her role as companion Amy Pond on Doctor Who, from the Matt Smith era (2010-2013). Gillan has begun a successful movie career by playing the cyborg villainess in Guardians of the Galaxy, in the horror movie Oculus, and one of the four jungle explorers in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.
Gillian is an atheist. Her family background is Catholic, and Karen was brought up in a Catholic household, but she herself isn’t religious. “My family are Catholics but I haven’t been christened and I don’t practice any religion,” Gillan once said to a reporter. (1)
She has been very careful to not mention any inclination towards a favorite politician or party. Karen is a citizen of Scotland and so can only vote in Scottish elections.
When the actress was promoting her scary movie Oculus, Karen was asked if she believed in spirits. “I do think something must be out there,” Karen answered. “Things we can’t perceive because our brains aren’t developed enough.”
Karen’s mother has a more pronounced belief in the existence of ghosts. “She’ll be like, ‘This dead relative is here in the room right now.’ Really casually, not scared at all,” Karen said of what her mother will say. (2)
It sounds like she is at least open to the possibility of the supernatural, if not an outright believer.
Karen has had past romantic relationships with photographer Patrick Green and actor Andrew Brooke. At the moment she isn’t in a longtime relationship.
On her finding a steady beau in America, Karen said, “Americans seem to go about it in a different way where they date loads of people at the same time. It’s probably a healthier way of finding someone, because you don’t put all your eggs in one basket. But I’m like, ‘Are you kissing all of them?’”
Karen was born in Inverness, Scotland on November 28, 1987. Her mother is a housewife and her father is a singer.
Gillan’s zodiac sign is Sagittarius.
