Leah Marie Remini is an American actor best known for her role as Kevin James’ wife on the sitcom The King of Queens. She began her acting career while in her teenage years by starring in guest roles on Who’s the Boss, Saved By the Bell and Friends. In recent years she has become an outspoken critic of Scientology.
For the first nine years of her life, Leah was raised as a Roman Catholic. She was baptized.
Remini’s mother broke from her Catholic faith and joined the Church of Scientology in 1979. She introduced Leah and her siblings to Scientology and in 1983 moved to Los Angeles to be closer to Scientology’s headquarters.
Throughout her teenage years and through her 20s and 30s, Leah Remini was a staunch Scientologist. She publicly supported the organization and defended it from critics. As she rose to fame from starring in King of Queens, Remini was a loyal supporter of the practice.
In July 2013, Leah Remini made the announcement that she was no longer a Scientologist. Leah claims that her breaking point was when she asked where the wife of Scientology’s leader was, after not being seen in public or at church functions for years. When her questions were ignored, she began questioning more of the church’s practices even as its’ members put pressure on her.
Remini has also revealed that the rest of her family have also left Scientology.
She has since mentioned that she has returned to practicing Catholicism and prays. (1)
Since departing the Church of Scientology, Leah has been very vocal about the failings of her former church. Along with numerous TV talk show appearances, Remini has written a memoir book about her time spent in Scientology and her departure from it.
She is also the producer and host of an A&E reality television series Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath. The show features interviews with former members of the religion and the trouble they have had leaving the group.
The actress hasn’t publicly mentioned if she leans right or left in her politics. She has opened up and revealed insider information about how Scientology members might choose who to vote for in elections.
“I know when I was in the organization, there were meetings amongst Scientologists on which ways to vote, and it was anyone who was pro-Scientology and its policies,” she told in an interview. (2)
Remini is married to a Puerto Rican actor named Angelo Pagan. They have one daughter, named Sofia, born in 2004.
