Oprah Winfrey is an internationally known television personality, former talk show host, businesswoman, occasional actor and self-made billionaire. Presently she oversees the running of her television network channel OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network) and several philanthropic causes. She made business history by becoming America’s first black multi-billionaire and has been labeled as the Queen of All Media due to the multi-decade success of her daytime talk show, The Oprah Winfrey Show.

Born on January 29, 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi, her middle name is Gail. Her zodiac sign is Aquarius.

One little-known fact about Winfrey is that her birth name wasn’t Oprah; instead, her mother named her Orpah after the Biblical woman named in the Book of Ruth. Because many people often misheard or misunderstood Winfrey’s birth name and instead used Oprah, the latter name stuck and she grew accustomed to using it herself.

    Oprah Winfrey – Her Religion

As a child, Oprah was raised in the Baptist faith of the American south. She was a regular church-goer and was a popular singer in the church choir.

Today Oprah identifies herself as being both religious and spiritual, with a strong belief in God. However, she hasn’t identified herself as a practitioner or follower of a specific Christian denomination. Instead, she chooses to be aloof and speak in a general way about God and a higher power.

Oprah has spoken on numerous occasions about her strong belief in God, both on her former talk show and in a 7-part series about spirituality and religion that aired on OWN:

“For me at this particular time in my life I recognize that everything is about moving closer to that which is God,” Oprah said once in an interview with TV’s Dr. Oz. “And without a full, spiritual center — and I’m not talking about religion — I’m talking about without understanding the fullness from which you’ve come, you can’t really fulfill your supreme moment of destiny. And I think everybody has a supreme moment of destiny.” (1)
